How To Turn Negative Thoughts Positive

personal growth

In my previous blog post, we talked about negative thoughts and how they can slow us down. The key to getting rid of them is through focusing on the positives!

That’s what today’s post is all about.

I’ll walk you through the process of turning your negative thoughts into positive ones. Of course, there will be plenty of actionable tips along the way.

Next time you feel a sense of doubt or anger, take a moment to stop and think about the correct way to positively address the situation.  You can do this by practicing the S.T.O.P. (Stop, Take Notice, Observe, Proceed) method a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) technique.  This will give your brain time to retrigger thoughts allowing you time to choose a positive thought.

For example, say you are in a meeting and your boss is blaming you for the loss of a customer.  You know that it's not true, but you're the only woman on the team and the boss targets you more than others.  The situation is causing you to have a negative vibe at work. No, it makes you hate going to work.  But...you have a plan, a vision for your future and this job is your funding source.  So, you start to feel frustrated right? As negative emotions arise due to the way you're being treated, it is SO SO SO IMPORTANT to take a second to S.T.O.P., breathe, collect your thoughts, truly think about what you are going to say, before responding!  I know it's not always easy, but in the end, you will walk out of that meeting as the bigger person and your boss will continue to grow respect for you.

Although negative thoughts can be hard to overcome, here are some ways to make them more positive.

  1. Take deep breaths.
  2. Surround yourself with positive people.
  3. Talk to someone you trust.
  4. Keep a gratitude journal.
  5. Focus on at least one positive thing that happened every day.
  6. Do something in your day that you find enjoyable.
  7. Complete your day by using positive affirmations, such as. “I am strong”, “I can do this”, and “you can deal with anything!”.
  8. Meditate daily and connect with the God of your understanding (GUS - God, Universe, Spirit)

Your reaction to your negative thoughts means everything! Don’t let them take control of you! Always remember to take a step back, breathe, think, then respond.
